PASSOVER / EASTER

resurrection chart

Passover or Easter? Which should the Christian be celebrating? According to the Bible - Passover. The word "Easter" in Acts 12:4, is a mistranslation, and should read Passover. The word Easter comes from either Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring, or a Teutonic festival called Eostur (World Book), or Ishtar, the goddess of spring and rebirth. Easter was a mythological character of the Babylonian religion that is said to have had rabbits that laid eggs, (The Fallacies of Easter - A Christian Jew Publication, Charles Halff, Director).

This next quote is from Unger’s Bible Dictionary, hereafter referred to as UBD, pg. 912. This is not quoted in exact order but is verbatim. “The discovery at Ras Shamra-Ugarit constitutes one of the major archaeological triumphs of the first half of the twentieth century. The French under C. F. A. Shaeffer have excavated this mound and uncovered an extremely important corpus of Canaanite religious epic poetry inscribed on clay tablets in alphabetic cuneiform. The great value of these cuneiform texts lies in the remarkable light they shed on the character of Canaanite religion. We now know the Canaanite picture very well. El and Baal were the two great gods. Anath, Astarte, and Asherah were the three goddesses, which were patronesses of sex and war. Canaanite religion with its orgiastic nature worship, the cult of fertility in the form of serpent symbols, sensuous nudity and gross mythology are revealed in their stark reality in these texts. No longer can critics accuse the God of Israel of injustice in ordering the extermination of these debilitating cults.”

The chart at the end of this chapter is an illustration of what is written in the Bible concerning the facts of the Passover celebration in comparison to the way most churches are celebrating it today.

Jesus said He would be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. The churches say a day and a half. The Bible says that he died at three p.m. and therefore would be resurrected at or by three p.m. three days and three nights later. The churches say he died at three p.m. on Friday and arose thirty-six hours later, Sunday morning. The Bible says that He died on the preparation day of a Sabbath, (a special High Day Sabbath) and the churches say, he died on a day (Friday) before the Saturday Sabbath.

Contrary to the Christian, first day Sabbath as mentioned in Unger’s Bible Dictionary and by numerous Bible scholars, teachers, preachers, pastors and commentators galore: Jesus did not arise on the first day of the week. The grave was already empty on the first day of the week. All the gospels attest to this fact. He arose on the regular Saturday Sabbath after being put to death on (Wednesday) the preparation day, because He had to be off the cross (tree) before the beginning of the special high day Sabbath, that the fore-mentioned people get confused with (Not so good) Friday. We have to remember; He was in the grave three days and three nights. He died at 3 P.M. and rose from the grave at 3 P.M. three days and three nights later, just as He said in Matthew 12:40.

The women that wanted to anoint the body of Jesus observed the Sabbath because they could do no work on the Special High Day Sabbath or the regular Saturday Sabbath and moreover, there were guards at the tomb to make sure no one would steal the body of Jesus, so they couldn’t anoint the body in between the two Sabbaths.

Concerning the resurrection of Jesus: As discussed earlier, the three days and the three nights (72 hours) that Jesus said He would be in the grave are very important. If He truly died on Friday, He would have risen from the grave on a Monday at three P. M. This we know to be clearly wrong. If the first day of the week is when He arose from the grave, it would have to have been at three in the afternoon on Sunday to correspond to the time of day that He died, to fulfill the three days and three nights.

The following excerpts of scripture from nine different versions of the Bible clearly teach that the women came to the grave after the Sabbath, early Sunday morning when it was still dark. And if they were really there early, just at the end of the Sabbath, in the evening, (because the Jewish day starts at sundown) which would seem plausible when you read in the accounts about the guards still being there. If you read the subsequent verses down to about four or five, you will clearly see that Jesus was already gone from the tomb when you take all these facts into consideration.

The upcoming chart clearly shows what the Bible says concerning the events that surround the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Which is: That He died on a Wednesday afternoon and was resurrected on a Saturday afternoon. His body was discovered already missing after the regular Sabbath, on what has been called the first day of the week, either Saturday afternoon (after 6:00 p.m.) or early Sunday morning.

A careful look at the chart while checking the scriptures will fill you in on exactly what the Bible says about the events of that three-day period. A lot of people say that the calendar is not the same as it was then. That may be true concerning months but there was still seven (7) days in a week and twenty-four (24) hours in a day.

H. H. Halley, in his book, Halley's Bible Handbook, Zondervan, pages 668-69, comment on 2 Peter, chapter 2, last paragraph, says, "It is a sorry picture. Even within the apostolic generation the world and the Devil had succeeded in making heavy onslaughts on the purity of the Church. Then followed the long centuries of Papal Corruption. And even now, in our own enlightened age, the Gospel of Christ in its original beauty and simplicity and purity, in many sections of the Church, still is buried and hid from view by the rubbish of forms and doctrines heaped upon the Church through the ages, by the world, and the Devil.

It is a terrible sin to corrupt the Church. All the ungodly shall be destroyed. This is an unceasing note of scripture. But one of the worst sins is, in the Name of Christ, to foist lies upon the Church in substitution for Christian truth." (Emphasis mine) "Let those who do it take warning from what happened to the fallen angels (4), and to the world of Noah's time (5), and to Sodom and Gomorrah (6)."

I am not saying this in a judgmental sense, but I think H. H. Halley probably celebrated Christmas, Easter and possibly Halloween, and didn't even write his words of condemnation with those holidays in mind, even though he should have. It should be noted that during the Papal Corruption that Halley mentioned, Easter and Christmas were placed into the inner fabric of the church that stayed on even after, or in spite of the reformation. And moreover, the blending in and acceptance of other unscriptural holidays and doctrinal tidbits by the Protestant Churches continues unto the present.

This is really an issue of the Son of God vs. the sun god. Easter celebrates the sun god and Passover celebrates the Son of God. How can this truth not be offensive to God? I think this explains how we all, Christians and otherwise, get the government we deserve. It is a fact that the majority of Americans get the government it deserves, but how can Christians put themselves out of that number, when they celebrate celebrations that God hasn’t ordained. All the worse is, the fact that Christians today are celebrating pagan celebrations with all the gusto of their pagan neighbors. As I mention in another chapter, Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority (which is, in all reality, a moral minority - in the scope of total population) celebrate things that God has not ordained, and yet expect the full blessing of God.

It wasn’t until my employer gave us Easter hams that it dawned on me and caused me to wonder; when did we exchange roasted lamb for baked ham? And bitter herbs for chocolate Easter bunnies? When did we start celebrating Easter instead of Passover? We should be eating lamb or a young goat. If we (Gentiles) have freedom in food, then you would think that we would have more respect for our fellow (Jewish) celebrants of Passover than to eat swine’s flesh in commemoration of the most holy day in all Judaism and Christendom. The death of Christ seals our salvation - so lets eat some pork.

I tend to worry about consumption of pork anyway in light of the following scripture: I think this is taking Acts 10:9-16 (Peter’s vision of the great sheet) into account. We are also told; if there is anything that makes our brothers weak, we should be willing to forsake it. Not only out of respect for the Jews, but for God and all He did setting up the first Passover to the last. These scriptures sure seem to describe the kingdom age and include a rebuke for eaters of swine’s flesh. Isa 66:17-20, 22-23. 17. They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD. 18. For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. 19. … that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. 20. And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD. 22. For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Did the “sheet” in Joppa contain swine, mice and dogs? No one can be sure but if you take into account other scripture (Isa 66) I can see much doubt about pork being something we should be eating. I think this is all part of, “rightly dividing the word of truth.” There were clean and unclean animals even back in the time of the flood. At this point I would like to add some scripture that I think goes along with this same thought.

Exodus 12:18-20

18. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 19. Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 20. Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
This passage: Exodus 12:18-20, and the entries of Exo. 12:1-24,; Num 9:2-14; 2 Ch. 35:1; Ezr. 6:19 and Luk. 22:7, are in this text to prove when the Israelites were to celebrate Passover. We Christians have stepped pretty far from the Old Testament pattern that was observed by Jesus' and His disciples - considering that He was the Passover lamb. I really don't know how the calendar changes have affected it in relation to today's calendar but since God worked six days and rested on the seventh, that tells me that it couldn't be too much different since there were seven days in a week.

Exodus 12:26-27

26. And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27. That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
Just look at how badly the church is handling the Passover message today. Our children are learning more about paganism than Passover. Isn't it funny how God, Jesus, the Bible and prayer got kicked out of school, but paganism in the form of Christmas and Easter continue on?

Leviticus 10:10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;
If this applies to wine in the temple then it should most certainly apply to paganism in the church today.

Numbers 9:2-14

2. Let the children of Israel also keep the Passover at his appointed season. 3. In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it. 4. And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the Passover. 5. And they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel. 6. And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the Passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day: 7. And those men said unto him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: wherefore are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the Lord in his appointed season among the children of Israel? 8. And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you. 9. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 10. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the Passover unto the Lord. 11. The fourteenth day of the second month at even they shall keep it, and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12. They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it. 13. But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the Passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the Lord in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin. 14. And if a stranger shall sojourn among you, and will keep the Passover unto the Lord; according to the ordinance of the Passover, and according to the manner thereof, so shall he do: ye shall have one ordinance, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land. See: Exo. 12:18-20.

2 Chronicles 35:1 Moreover Josiah kept a Passover unto the Lord in Jerusalem: and they killed the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. See: Exo. 12:18-20.

Ezra 6:19 And the children of the captivity kept the Passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month. See: Exo. 12:18-20.

Ezekiel 8:13-16

13. He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. 14. Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord's house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. 15. Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these. 16. And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord's house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.
I realize this was written to Israel, but the sunrise service that is alluded to in vs. 16 is "strange fire" as far as the Bible and Passover is concerned, and is one of those "Corruptions" Halley mention of the Papal Corruptions of the dark ages, whether he knew it or not. It is understandable that a "true" Protestant would celebrate some of what they turned away from in the reformation, but for those that were practicing "That Way" which was directly from Christ, it is really a sad turn of events. It only goes to show you that if you practice something fun enough, loud enough, and long enough, it will, over the years, be accepted by anyone letting down their guard, and/or not knowing the truth in the first place.

Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
You have to remember that this group (priests) should have known better than anyone; the dangers in turning away.

Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
The sad part about these two scriptures is that most preachers today are celebrating pagan holidays and therefore won't be teaching the difference between unclean and clean, and between profane and holy, to anybody. You would also think that preachers and teachers of today would know better.

If the preachers are using that much of an "untruth" to promote Jesus to an unbelieving world, why couldn't a bunch of TV preachers get together and build a garden tomb, so they all could bring the resurrection message to their viewers "live from where it happened." Look at all the money they would save. It would be great; until the news media found out about it. It's too bad there isn't a news media that is willing to expose Easter and the other holidays for what they really are, but the media is a part of the encroaching apostasy themselves and don't even know it.

These preachers are constantly telling us to turn away from fornication, adultery, homosexuality, drunkenness, and all the other forms of sin, yet don't warn us away from what was formerly associated with idolatry and paganism itself.

Different people mentioned to me that the days of the week were somehow different in Israel’s history. Well, when God rested on the seventh day and hallowed it, it says to me that there were seven days in the week no matter what they were called, no matter what the phases of the moon were doing. It also says to me that the first day of the week follows the seventh day of the week. If Jesus, according to scripture, was already out of the grave on the first day of the week, early in the day, whether morning or evening (depending on when the Jewish day started) then it stands to reason that He rose form the grave sometime before that, what we call the Sunday gathering of female disciples for the anointing and proper burial of Jesus. If we let the Bible speak, it will put everything in order.

The following scriptures deal with the Text, Chart and Chart Presentation Instructions.

Exodus 12:18,21.

18. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 21. Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the Passover.
The first month being, Nisan (April) and the fourteenth day being the day that Jesus was killed, and there was a "high day Sabbath" on the fifteenth day.

Deuteronomy 16:5-8

5. Thou mayest not sacrifice the Passover within any of thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee: 6. But at the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the Passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt. 7. And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents. 8. Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work therein.
First of all, we have to remember Passover is a historical remembrance of Israel leaving bondage in Egypt and there was a great judgment that night and much death upon the first born of all those that weren't covered by the blood. We Christians were told through Israel, in Exodus 12:26-27, that when our children ask what is the meaning of the Passover celebration, we are to give them the true meaning. Israel has only one version to tell, whereas Christians are to tell their children both the Old Testament and the New Testament versions concerning the Passover. Easter bunnies, colored eggs, hot cross buns and all the rest have no part with this most solemn Jewish/Christian ceremony. It is, or at least should be, an affront to both religions.

Jonah 1:17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

The last three verses really need no explanation. They are clearly speaking of seventy-two (72) hours, not thirty-six (36).

Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
The day of preparation was the day before the special high day Sabbath which was treated just like any other Sabbath. The bodies could not stay on the tree, and they had to be buried before the Sabbath started at 6:00 p.m., because no one was allowed to do any servile work on any Sabbath.

Mark 16:1-2

1. And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
This scripture indicates it was Sunday morning when the women came to anoint the body of Jesus. If they came to the tomb after the Sabbath (after 6:00 p.m., on our Saturday evening) they may not had enough time to anoint the body of Jesus before night fall, not to mention the guards could have possibly still been there.

Luke 22:7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the Passover must be killed.
See: Exo. 12:18-20.

John 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
If there are twelve in the day there are also twelve hours in the night. I think this further substantiates the twenty-four (24) hour day, which proves Jesus was in the grave seventy-two (72) hours and not thirty-six (36).

John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

This Sabbath was not a regular sabbath, as the chart will prove out.

John 19:41-42

41. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
This scripture also seems to indicate that it was Sunday, early in the morning.

John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

The presentation instructions are so you can draw out each step in its natural progression.

Presentation Instructions
1. Title-Passover/Resurrection.

2. Time line (extra on each end).

3. We know that He died, (put a cross one day from the left side).

4. We know that He died at 3 p.m. Luke 23:44,46; (The key to the time frame lines).

5. We know that He was resurrected the third day.

6. We know this based on Jonah 1:17; Matthew 12:40; 27:62-66. We know that He was in the tomb three days and three nights, a 72 hour period, not 36 hours as is presently taught in most churches. Further proof will be coming; (Preparation/high days). Based on this 72 hour fact, draw three arches between the death and resurrection lines, 3 and 5.

7. Label the days, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

8. Based on the "three days," write in 3 p.m. under the death and resurrection lines, 3 and 5.

9. Connect the death and resurrection lines (3 and 5) with a horizontal line. (Deut 21:23; Jonah 1:17; Matt. 12:40; 27:62-66).

10. Fill in all 3 p.m. time lines between lines 3 and 5.

11. Another thing we know is that the Jewish day and the Passover celebration began at 6 p.m. according to Exodus 12:18 and Leviticus 23:5. (Therefore draw in all the 6 p.m. time lines between 3 and 5).

12. John 19:31, says that the body of Jesus and the two malefactors could not remain hanging because the Sabbath day was coming (See: Ex. 12:16; Lev. 23:5-8,32.) Fill in the Sabbath from 6 p.m. in day one, to 6 p.m. in day two. (Exodus 12:16; Leviticus 23:5-8,32; John 19:31). We also find out that this was a special Sabbath. It follows the day of preparation. These two days are proof that the Bible is talking in terms of 24-hour days. The day of preparation distinctly ended and the Sabbath day began. Jesus Himself said, “are there not twelve hours in a day?" John 11:9 That means also that there are twelve hours in the night. In Matthew 12:40, Jesus says, "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

13. Draw in another "day" arch preceding the 1st day. (This will cover the day of preparation.)

14. Fill in and label the properly spaced "time of day" lines, from the death line (#3) to the left, leaving off at 3 p.m.

15. Fill in the day of preparation from 6 p.m. in day one (which is the beginning of the Sabbath) to the 6 p. m. line at the left. This is the day of preparation. Exodus 12:16; John 19:31.

16. According to Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1-3; Luke 24:1 and John 20:1, it was the end of the Sabbath, that being the first day of the week, (Sunday) so the two Marys and the others could go to the sepulchre to finish anointing the body of Jesus. Because of the three 24 hour days between the death and the resurrection, this "end of the Sabbath" brings us to the first day of the week. We can now see that we are dealing with two Sabbaths. This, "end of the Sabbath," Sabbath is the regular Saturday Sabbath. The Sabbath mentioned in # 12 was a high day, which differs from a Saturday.

17. Draw another arch from the resurrection line (# 5) to the right and fill in the "time of day" lines ending at the 3 p.m. line.

18. Fill in the Saturday Sabbath from 6 p.m. in day 3, to the 6 p.m. line in the far right arch.

19. Since we know that Sunday is on the 6 p.m. line in the right outside arch (#17), to the right of day 3, back up to the 6 p.m. line in day 3 and write Saturday, then go to the 6 p.m. line in day 2 and put Friday, then go to the 6 p.m. line in day 1 and put Thursday, then to the 6 p.m. line under the left outside arch and put Wednesday.

20. Conclusion: We find that Jesus died on a Wednesday and arose on the following Saturday. He did not die on a Friday and arise on the following Sunday morning. He was in the grave for three days and three nights, not a day and a half.
